Contact Lens Exams

Comprehensive eye exams take a close look at the health of the eyes. Our optometrist is looking for early warning signs of eye diseases like glaucoma and macular degeneration. The eye exam is also when our eye doctor will determine if your vision needs correction to combat nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. Contact lens fittings go a step further. Our optometrist will measure the surface of your eye and prescribe the best contact lens fit that is available.

Types of Contact Lenses

Soft contact lenses are a vision solution for many patients who need vision correction. The lenses are made of a soft and light material that sits on the eye and provides barely-there comfort. Patients usually adapt to wearing these lenses very quickly. Soft contact lenses are available in daily wear styles that are worn for one day and then get thrown away. There are also options for lenses that are thrown away after a week or more of wear.

Toric lenses are a special kind of soft contact lenses that are prescribed for some patients with astigmatism. Toric lenses are weighted on one end to compensate for the irregular cornea curvature that comes with astigmatism.

The contact lens solution for some patients is rigid gas permeable lenses. These lenses are smaller than soft lenses and are made of a thicker material. Oxygen easily passes through the rigid gas permeable lenses and tears can get underneath them. Rigid gas permeable lenses sometimes take longer to adjust to, but patients report long-term comfort and excellent vision correction with these lenses.

There are also specialty contact lenses available that are hybrids between rigid gas permeable lenses and soft lenses. MultiFocal Contact Lenses can provide functional distance and near vision with reduced dependency on glasses. These lenses are available in soft or hard materials.
