Causes of Blurry Vision

Myopia

Many people call it nearsightedness. People suffering from this problem find it hard to see distant objects. Blurriness is a common symptom associated with myopia.

Hyperopia

Also known as farsightedness, patients who suffer from this condition struggle to identify near objects but find it easy to focus on distant objects.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a problem that affects many people as they age. This naturally occurring condition among the elderly makes it difficult to read books or magazines. Presbyopia is due to a hardened lens.

Astigmatism

This is a condition that causes unclear vision at all distances. It is a sign of an irregularly shaped cornea.

Pregnancy

Hormonal changes in pregnant women can cause blurred vision. Some cases of unclear vision may indicate high blood pressure or diabetes.

Eye Floaters

Eye floaters are common in older adults. Floaters occur when the vitreous liquefies, causing small floating tissues in the eye. In some cases, it could be a result of a damaged retina.

Other causes of blurry vision include wearing contact lenses for long, eye drops, and dry eyes. In some people, unfocused vision could be a symptom of underlying health conditions, such as:

  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Macular Degeneration
  • Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Heart diseases.

Treatment

Treatment performed by our optometrist will vary depending on the cause and severity of your blurred vision. Myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia can be corrected by wearing glasses and contact lenses. Other conditions such as dry eyes, migraines, pregnancy can be treated by medical prescriptions and eye drops. Severe conditions like cataracts may need surgery.
