One in every six Americans over the age of 40 gets cataracts. Fortunately, cataracts are a treatable condition. Our team at Wally Kojima, O.D. and Associates in Kailua-Kona wants you to know the seven signs of cataracts.

Cloudy or Blurry Vision

These signs may look familiar to people who have worn glasses for many years. It may seem like you need a stronger prescription. However, getting a new pair of glasses is a short fix. As the condition progresses, new glasses may only help for a few months, and then the cloudy or blurry vision returns.

Colors Dim or Change

Colors are just not as vibrant as they used to be. It can become more difficult to tell shades of colors apart. You may observe everything turning more yellow or brown.

Glare

The light seems an awful lot brighter than usual. Lights may give off halos. Even indoor lights that you have used for years may become too bright or covered in halos.

Driving at Night Becomes More Difficult

Problems with blurry vision, glare, and having trouble telling colors apart make nighttime driving dangerous. It can be incredibly difficult to tell where the other drivers are on the road. Lights from other vehicles may appear to be in many places at once.

Double Vision

Normally, double vision is a problem due to both eyes not functioning to create one image. Shutting one eye often eliminates the problem. With cataracts, you can shut one eye and the double vision will remain.

Second Sight

Suppose you have needed reading glasses for years. You discover that you no longer need reading glasses to see small objects like printed words. In optometry, this is called, “second sight.” Unfortunately, this goes away over time as the cataract worsens.

Darkening of Vision

You need to turn on more lights to do normal things like reading, going up and down stairs, or shaving.
