At Wally Kojima, O.D. and Associates, our eye doctor in Kailua-Kona recommends annual eye exams for all adults. If you have scheduled an eye exam, learn what to expect.
An annual eye exam is the best way to protect your vision from harmful conditions, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration. When we check your eyes annually, we are able to spot these eye conditions even before they have symptoms. Early detection means more effective and less expensive treatment.
Annual eye exams also keep your prescription up to date, so you can see clearly and enjoy your life.
During an eye exam, our optometrist, Dr. Kojima, asks about your eyes and vision, including any symptoms you may be experiencing or if you have a family history of eye problems.
Dr. Kojima then checks your vision using both reading and eye charts. These tests indicate how well your eyes see, using the 20/20 scale. We'll also check how your eyes focus, perceive depth, and function together.
Based on the results of vision screenings, we may prescribe glasses or contact lenses or update an existing prescription. If you want contact lenses, we will need to perform a separate contact lens exam to measure your eyes for lenses. If you need glasses, browse our optical boutique to find the perfect pair of frames!
After we evaluate your vision, we move on to your eye health. We'll check your internal eye pressure, which is an indicator of glaucoma. To do this, we may dilate your eyes. This can affect your vision for a short period of time after the test.
We will also check the internal structures of your eyes to gauge the health of your retina, and then make any eye health recommendations.
