Here at Wally Kojima, O.D and Associates, we are your partner in preventing, diagnosing, treating, and managing eye diseases. Learn how we protect your eyes through early diagnosis and treatment of common eye diseases.
During your annual eye exam, our optometrist in Kailua-Kona checks your eyes for signs of eye diseases. In the early stages, diseases like glaucoma or macular degeneration show few to no symptoms, yet can be detected by an eye doctor. It is cheapest and easiest to treat eye diseases when they are caught early, so it is very important that you get your eyes checked annually.
Common eye diseases include cataracts, which cloud your vision, glaucoma, which causes blindness if not treated, and dry eyes.
Symptoms that you may have an eye disease include changes to your vision, flashes of light, floaters, increased headaches or dizzy spells, and blurred vision. If you experience any of these symptoms, make an appointment for an eye exam.
Many eye diseases can be prevented by eating right, adopting healthy life habits, and seeing us regularly.
If we find you have dry eyes, we may prescribe medicated eye drops or suggest you increase home humidity or wear computer glasses, which decrease dryness while working at a computer.
If you have cataracts, we may monitor their growth and refer you for eye surgery when the time is right.
For glaucoma, our regular tests help us prescribe medication to lower your internal eye pressure before it is too late. If left untreated, glaucoma causes blindness. While glaucoma cannot be cured, it can be treated using vision aids, lifestyle habits, and medication. We can discuss low vision aids that help you see better as the disease progresses.
